I have been scanning through the topics here and see a reoccuring theme. MSTS, out of the box, was a crummy program. There are many things that do not work right and many that do not work at all. There are some excellent sites for help in fixing MSTS so it works better. I am going to list a few of them for you so you can see what is what.
General
www.train-sim.com - this is the best site that you will find. The FAQ section and forums are excellent. The Downloads have over 3000 downloads to make MSTS better and to expand it.
www.UKTrainsim.com - this is also an excellent site. this has a lot of UK stuff.
www.mapleleaftracks.com/index1.html - payware routes - Kicking Horse Pass, Sandpatch, Iron ore route, and the D&H is coming.
www.3DTrains.com - payware and freeware. No routes yet, but F's and GP's. This is also the home of my forum - Lone Wolf Activities
www.3DTrainstuff - payware routes, Cajon, Tehachapi, Cambria
Kevin Arceneaux Mining Engineer, Penn State 1979
