Cant use dynamic brakes

  • I was hoping someone could help.I installed train simulator and it works fine except the dynamic brake dosen't work on the GP38. I can move the dynamic brake handle but no braking effect and no engine whine sound. I shuold point out that the dynamics work fine on the Dash 9. It even makes a growling sound as it slows the train. But on the Geep I can move the lever but nothing. I am using the correct handle, I worked on the real ones for years. I would appreciate any help.

  • My main question is: Do the dynamic brakes actually do anything, i.e. do they slow the train down any. If moving the lever doesn't work try the >/. key to turn on the dynamics and the
  • In addition to my previous reply I just went and tried to do the same thing. By manually activating the dynamic brakes with the cursor on the screen the brakes set up locking the lever in place then unlocks when the dynamic brakes are on. They do work but as you said there is no sound. However, when I went outside the cab you can barely hear a slight whine that sounds more like the prime mover in notch one with a slightly higher pitch. I do not currently know any fixes with this but many other geeps I have downloaded have the correct sound.
  • I use the keyboard most of the time and I am using the >/. key. I made several runs over the same section of track with the same train over and over to see if there is any breaking effect between no brakes and dynamic brakes. There does seem to be a slight slowing of the GP38 in dynamic but no where near as effective as the Dash 9. There may not be anything wrong, maybe this is just the way the geep is set up. I can move the dynamic brake lever with the keyboard and you can here it clicking and see it move. As I mentioned I worked on the real thing and we had GP38's and the dynamics were way more powerful than on the simulator. I have read how some say that the simulator is so real but in this case it is not. Also the train air brakes seem to stop faster than the real ones. The Dash 9 seems to be more like the real thing when it comes to the dynamics.I am tinkering with some of the engine settings in the options file. I plan to install a new video card so I can use the higher settings for the graphics. By the way I only had train sim for a week. Could you list some good web sites to download motive power. Thanks for your help. Ron
  • I agree with you that I think it is just the way Microsoft Train Simulator is designed, as to the train brakes application time Microsoft probably didn't want people getting frustrated after constantly crashing trains. Now back to your other comment. There are innumerable sites out there with add-ons, most of them free. As far as add-ons go many of the diesel electrics are based on some locomotive types by the professional design companies which also provide freeware. Some of these sites do require registration which is completely free though.
Here is a short listing of good sites:
requires log-in registration but has an immense amount of add-ons in almost any railroad you can think of.
has somewhat slow downloads but great freeware samples of Canadian equipment, also the site for their full cost routes, Sandpatch grade on the CSX and Kicking Horse Pass on Canadian Pacific.
a good site for buying good quality add-ons but they also make free examples available
    --www.alabamarailfan.com
a genuinely good site with beautiful add-ons of modern Norfolk Southern, CSX, Southern and other railroads.
a smaller professional site with some great freeware samples that other add-ons use as a base requirement.

Besides these sites there are many others catering from every interest from creating entire virtual railroad operations to trolleys and other traction.

  • Thanks for the info. I downloaded a SD45 from Train-sim.com.. It seems to run more like a real engine. The dymamic brake slows better then on the default locomotives and when you set the air you slide quite a ways before you stop. More like the real thing.

  • k....the dynamics on the GP38 don't work
ask someone who knows the code.......and then go into the ENG file and screw with the code until its right and makes dynamics work

i just downloaded a loco physics pack that had it fixed in it and replaced the eng file.

10000 feet and no dynamics? Today is going to be a good day ...

  • Don't play with the code, If you do not know what you are doing you will screw it up worse that it already is. Go into the download section at train-sim.com and get the V4.5 physics upgrade from Bob. copy and paste the dumanic brake section into the eng file.

  • thats what i did...the only code ive messed with is changeing and eng file and a cabview in it

10000 feet and no dynamics? Today is going to be a good day ...

  • i cant do it unless i have step by step

10000 feet and no dynamics? Today is going to be a good day ...

  • You will need to have two Wordpads open.

In one you will have the eng to be modified, in the other you will have the GP38-2 file from the update. You will be copying sections to fully update the eng file.
    1st section
Highlight in the 4.5 file the lines from Mass through BrakeCylinderPressureForMaxBrakeBrakeForce( 64 ) Lines. right click and copy.
highlight the same lines in the eng to be modified. Right click and paste.
    2nd Section
in the 4.5 file, highlight the lines from type through max diesel and copy and paste.
    3rd Section
in the 4.5 file, highlight the lines from max diesel level through Does horn trigger bell and copy and paste.
    4th Section
in the 4.5 file, highlight the lines from brake_train through dircontrol and cop and paste.

    save and that is it.
