I have tried to decouple cars and I follow the directions in the book but when I click on the red coupler icon instead of opening it disapears and does not open. What am I doing wrong?

I might not understand you, but if your are referring to the uncouple window in train sim, when you click on the coupler between cars that you want to uncouple, coupler does not open, the cars you uncoupled, dissapear from the window
10000 feet and no dynamics? Today is going to be a good day ...

I think you are referring to Trainz. In order to decouple, you want to make sure your view is not centred on the car you are trying to uncouple from.

In Trainz.,
Use the Janey coupler icon, to uncouple,
simply run up behind the moving consist, and let her go!
