CADRAIL

  • I am in the planning stage for a midsized N scale layout and am looking for quality design software that will help prevent expensive mistakes when going from a drawing to actual construction.  I also want to simulate actual trains running on the design.  CADRAIL looks like it might satisfy my needs but was hoping to hear from someone with actual experience.

  • I have a follow up to my original post which has influenced my decision about CADRAIL.  I called the number listed for Sandia Software in Albuquerque and inquired about coming to their place of business to purchase the software and hopefully have it loaded on my laptop while I was there.  As my wife and I were travelling through the western US with our fifth wheel I was looking forward to acquiring CADRAIL directly from the developer.  I looked up the address on Google Earth and saw that it looked like a residence rather than a business location so I called Sandia Software a day ahead of time to ensure I had the correct location and that I was interested in acquiring both the CD and the reference manual.  I left my name and number asking for a return call but did not receive one.  The next day I showed up at the address and rang the door bell hoping for the best.  The man that came to the door confirmed I was indeed at Sandia Software (he works out of his home) but that they will under no circumstances sell or accept visitors at their place of business.  I identified who I was and that I had called to which he said "yeah, I got your call" and flatly refused to sell me his software other than on the internet.  So, I walked away empty handed from a "businessman" who doesn't have the first clue about customer service.  I don't care how good his product is he will not get my business and I will tell as many people as possible about my negative experience.
  • being in a residental neighborhood, he is probably forbidden by law to sell product out of is home without a license of some sort. maybe he thought you were from the state and were testing him.

I have an older version of Cadrail...nice program, steep learning curve. may be easier if you have cad background.
