Thomas Help, Please

  • I know you all are into model trains, but I was hoping somebody could answer my Thomas toy train question.  I want to get my budding train enthusiest (he's just turning 3) the die cast Thomas the Tank Engine trains for his birthday.  Do the "Trackmaster" sets and "Take Along" sets work interchangeably or are they seperate sets entirely?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide!

  • Hello,

I would say if they rn on wooden brio style trackes they should be interchangable.  Sorry about the lack of info.

  • Hey,

I'm sorry I don't know your answer. But, my little brother (Second youngest, I'm the oldest) he is 6 but when he was 2 he showed the same intrests in Model Railroading and stuff, so my parents got him the Thomas Wooden Trains things. Personally I was brought up with metal ones (1990's) and then wooden ones take alot more abuse and stuff. I mean they are a bit more expensive, but they are fun, easy to work with and easy to set up and stuff, I even like sitting down and playing with them. I mean its up to you but the wooden things from thomas are the best. Mike

  • Thomas "trackmaster" and "take along" do not interchange. I have a 4 yr old and he has both. I prefer the take alongs b/c you don't have to keep replacing batteries and they are metal and not plastic. Hope I was able to answer your question.
  • My granddaughter just turned 4.  She has the HO electric Thomas and you can't tear her away from it.  I was afraid she was too young, but that turned out to not be the case.

  • The wooden trains at that age group with the magnetic connectors between cars and the peices of track that can be built into wild figaments of a child's imagination are quite suitable. No batteries and no electricity needed.

Just lots of track and rolling stock and maybe a few buildings. The more stuff a child has to play with the more fun. =)

Just the physical activity of climbing all around the dedicated play room for this activity will exercise your child very well.

One of my hobby shops had a lot of these but because of the recent Lead problem I dont know the status of those products, indeed there should be absolutely no reason for lead as I consider it a problem of the past... like 30+ years ago.

Im sorry I cannot answer your specific question regarding track sets. In my time, we only had one kind of wooden trains.

Alas, lead in paint, even for toys, seems to be quite a present-day program in mainland China.  I was recently outraged to hear that the U.S. corporations who contract with the Chinese factories to manufacture these and so many other things are not allowed to enter the plant for inspection.  If your boy is especially "oral" at his age that's something to think about.
