Making options work, how?

I have tried to set the options to show only new messages since last logon without any luck.
I set the Date Filter to "new since last visit," then click "Apply." Next time I will sometimes get a message saying there are three pages of new messages and when I go to the second page, it won't display, showing an error message.
What is the way to set options so when you logon you only see new since last logon?
Also what is the difference between Apply and Remember?
I also have used Mark All Read only to log on and see messages I've marked read showing as new and there have been no new posts added to the threads.
Thanks.
