  • Novice train chaser needs your help with an acronym.  While visiting a RR hot spot in Ohio, I overheard a veteran railfan telling another than a train was stopped a half-hour down the line because two TOL's were detected.  My best guess (since it was reportedly an intermodal) for this new acronym (new to me) was "trailers out of line."  What in fact does TOL stand for?

long, long, short, long. Thumbs Up

  • Well, nobody else has jumped in so I'll give it a shot.   The standard notation "TOL" on a switchlist stands for "take out load", but I've never heard it referred to on the radio as other than "pull" or, more generally, "pick up".
