  • Amtrak amfleet again. I just wondering how many of you like Amtrak's concept of converging their diners and lounges.
    Thanks.

  • I personally hate it.

The Superliner diner is a perfect design.  It's efficient, well thought out, and effective.  The new diner lounge seating is awkward and appears very inefficient.  It also means less food options and service.

I hope it will never catch on, but if it does pray this concept doesn't make it to the very long distance trains like the Southwest Chief, California Zephyr, Empire Builder, and Sunset Limited.  It's also a bad idea for the Coast Starlight and Capitol Limited.  I wouldn't mind seeing the Auto Train get one as I sort of dislike this Superliner hog.  For the other Superliner trains, such as the Texas Eagle, City of New Orleans, etc...it makes sense.

Dinner in the diner was one of the key drawing points to take a long distance Amtrak trip.  Without full meals I doubt Amtrak long distance would last very long.

Take a look at this fantastic website for photos and info on the prototype Superliner Diner Lounge 37000.

  • If this is what it takes to keep train routes from being cutoff, then so be it. I don't like to see the change either, but this is the sign of the times. My advice prior to boarding a train: eat a good hearty meal.
