LGB train set capabilities?

  • I just purchased an LGB starter set (used) from eBay.  The set number is 20301.  I has a Stainz engine, marked 2020 on the bottom.  The set did not come with a book or maual.  I am wondering if this train has smoke or sound capabilities, and if it does, how to I get these things to work?  I am very new at this and if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks so much.

  • Repost this in the Garden RR forum, more people with LGB experience than these small scalersWink [;)]

I dont have any real experience with this set, I know newer Stainz have sound and have had smoke for a while...check out LGB of America., they have service manuals on line that can help...

       Have fun with your trains

  • Thanks, I have re-posted it.
  • LGB sets are easily converted to smoke if the do not have it.  To check, turn the engine upside down and if it does there will be a little steel lever directly under the stack that can be rotated at least 45 degrees to make or break a little button on the bottom of the stack.  If you have it it should only contact the button when you want to make smoke so you don't overheat the heating element.  The stacks are friction fit so if you want smoke you just pull out the old one and push in the smoker.  Most shops that sell LGB will have them as an accessory.  I suspect they cost about $20.00 each at this point.  I doubt you have sound as that is a small enine with no place for it.  You should find a speaker or slots in the bottom somewhere for a place for the sound to come out if you do.
