speeders, motor cars, and hand carts

this form is for anyone that ownes a speeder, motor car, or (few and far between) hand carts.

i happen to own a farmont 180 and was wondering how many pepole on trains.com had one, so if you have one and have got info about your equipement come on in and talk for a while.

I've got two Fairmont speeders that are operational. The first one I bought in 1996 was a UP car MT-19B with a front wind shield and curtains. It took me 13 months to get it running and it was originally sold to the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad on May 16, 1985. But I wanted an all weather car with doors for increasing my ride season. So in 2002, I bought an MT-19A and totally resrored it from the axle on up. Don't know any history on this car but it came from the UP, Portland division. During the restoration I didn't care about the cost so I installed a David Clark intercom system into it so I could have a nice conversation with the crew without shouting all the time.

That is not me in the photo but of a good friend. I take photos of everyone that rides with me on a ride for good memories.

I am an Australian forum reader that has 3 fairmont cars with only one operational.  They are all 3'6" (42") gauge, built in Australia and 2 are model MT14's and one an ST2.  Only one MT14 has the original 2 stroke engine and the others have a local conversion using a Briggs & Stratton 2 cylinder 4 stroke 18hp engine and a centrifical belt drive arrangement.  In the last several weeks some members of the Australian Society of Section Car Operators and I travelled over 1000km (600 miles) on our cars and are doing another 200km + next weekend.  Our cars are quite different to yours as ours are much more open with 2 of mine having no sides or roof and the other having a roof and canvas roll-up sides.  Another popular model here, the M15, generally have a windscreen, back panel and a roof with completely open sides.

Here is a better photograph of the car I restored. It took me 3 years but it was a total piece of junk when I got it back in 2002. There were several parts missing and I probably spent a fortune replacing what was taken by someone else. But that's okay. I got a brand new car with all new frame, rear axle, side panels, rear and front panels, deck side panels and deck plus I've installed a David Clark headset/intercom system so neither you or your rider have to yell at each other just to be heard.

There is only one other car I know of that looks very simular to this one. It's another Cotton Belt Car located in Topeka, Kansas. It looks really great too. Sometimes when were on a ride together we get our cars mixed up and start driving the wrong car. It's pretty funny when you consider it and your about a mile down the track then finally waking up to the fact you have the wrong car and have to make a stop to switch operators. Enjoy.

There are some people here in Manitoba who have speeders or "Jiggers" as we sometimes call them. I took a nice photo of a Woodings Railcar owned by a local Winnipegger at Railway Days 2005.

that restored farmont is awsome! i want to redo our (my dad and i's) to its former running condition we have to get spotlights and such though

BTW do you mean 'handcars' - as in RR vehicles powered by hand - or "handcarts" which would be the big carts used at depots to move passenger's luggage around with??
