  • The GH&H was owned for a long time by Missouri Pacific and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas. It gave both of them access to Galveston. They also owned, along with the ATSF, the connecting Texas City Terminal Railway. Union Pacific acquired the GH&H by acquiring both the MP and the MKT.

  • The GH&H was a unique little railroad. It did indeed host a commuter train during World War Two and signals were installed between Congress Avenue and  Harrisburg during that time,I believe. The signal system was active until fairly recently. The railroad handled export grain and cotton to Galveston, chemicals to and from Texas City, and sugar to Sugar Land which was brought in by barge from Florida. The line is the shortest route between Houston and Galveston (49 miles) but was never the fastest. The line also only has four curves in it's entire length.A fun little railroad to run on .
  • Cool [8D]thanks for the info

  • I've got an operational section car MT-19B that was sold to GH&H by Fairmont Railway Motors. I also have the information card noting the optional equipment and the date it was sold. I'm at work right now and can not give you the exact date it was sold to them but I will when I get home this evening.

After the mergeres, the car finally ended up in Grand Island, NE and I purchased it in 1996. Acording to the former owner, the car didn't run very well and was practically brand new with very few track miles. This car was equiped with a windshield and two side panels but no doors or curtains. No windshield wipers either.

It runs good and I plan to do some restoration so does anyone have an emblem of the GH&H railroad?

GH&H was also know as the Going Home Hungry railroad.
