moving locales

  • Currently I'm a conductor with Canadian Pacific Railway in Toronto, however I may be moving to the Pittsburgh area in the near future.  I'm curious if anyone knows what the hiring situation is like or knows of any other resources I can check out.  Any advice, tips, assistance will be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Let me just begin by stating I do not work for the railroad. With that being said your best bet would be NS. Conway yard is just 20 miles from Pittsburgh and is one of the largest yards on the system and is a crew change point.

    In fact, just for kicks I did a quick search on the NS website (I used the site to look for interships last summer) and found that there is in fact an opening for a conductor in the Pittsburgh area. If that doesn't work for you there is also a listing for Altoona, about an 1 1/2 hour drive from Pittsburgh.

    If you have something against NS, well it gets a bit harder. CSX does run throught Pittsburgh but there is no major yard or crew change point in the city. The nearest are Connellsville, PA and New Castle, PA about a 1 1/2 and 2 hour drive, respectively.

    There are also several short lines, the largest being the US Steel owned Union Railroad. From what I've heard from guys at these roads its alot harder to get in as the work force is pretty small to begin with and most people are lifers.     Other short lines include the Wheeling & Lake Eire (but that is only one or two trains a day that call out of Pittsburgh), the AVR and BLE. I don't really know anybody working those lines but I would guess the situation is the same since they are both smaller operations.
