What I did on my summer vacation

  • Well, we haven't actually had summer yet, but a few weeks ago I did poke my nose over the fence at West Coast Railways Ballarat (Victoria, AU) facility and noted the various steam loco's under going restoration.

  • I went to the Colorado Museum on my 15th birthday.

  • This spring my brother and myself rode the Ohio Central last regular steam train out of Sugarcreek and have tickets for the two day fall steam special in October. What a treasure they have there in Ohio. Hoping that this doesn't end and ways are found to continue this steam operation.

  • On a trip west this summer I realized I was as close to Ely, Nevada, as I am ever likely to be, so I took a detour and visited and rode the Nevada Northern. They are pretty far off any beaten path, but the read and the hospitality make it worth many extra miles. I would urge anyone visiting Nevada or Utah to check them out.

  • [:)] Our family visited the Illinois Railway Musuem in Union, IL. It was my first visit in many years and I was impressed with the progress that the group has made over the years. The "ride" is now a really worthwhile trip and the collection has grown sugnificantly. While a considerable amount of equipment still needs restoration, most are now protected under roof. That which has been retored is excellent, indeed. The museum, which has many types of equipment, is a "must see" for almost any rail enthusiast. Even bus fan will find exhibits of interest!

  • I visited the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad after a vist to Yosemite National Park in Northern California. The operate a beautiful three - truck Shay. I got great photos of the whole train plus a video clip of the train leaving the station. I'd be happy to send the photos and clip to anybody. Just email me at jonathanhtd@yahoo.com.

  • Visited the Wisconsin Great Northern in Spooner, WI twice and enjoyed their lunch in a 1903 car with its original mahogany interior. Also visited the railroad museum next door and drove around northern Minnesota looking for old depots. The saddest I saw was in Staples, MN--a brick, 2-storey building, but abandoned and neglected.
