What I did on my summer vacation

Visited the Wisconsin Great Northern in Spooner, WI twice and enjoyed their lunch in a 1903 car with its original mahogany interior. Also visited the railroad museum next door and drove around northern Minnesota looking for old depots. The saddest I saw was in Staples, MN--a brick, 2-storey building, but abandoned and neglected.

My son and I rode the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge. It was excellent!
Also took in the Colorado Rail museum in Golden.
And snapped some pictures of the Santa Fe Southern on my trip west.

Went to Williams, Arizona and rode the Grand Canyon Railway to the Grand Canyon and back. Great time Pullled by F unit Diesels Stayed at the Fray Marcos Hotel next to the Railroad Depot. Was there for 3 days The people on the Railroad were great as well as the staff at the hotel. The BNSF runs right next to the Grand Canyon Railroad with freights going east and west all day and night. Good pictures of both the Grand Canyon Railroad and BNSF freights coming down the grade at you. Was there from August 8-10, then caught the Southwest Cheif from Flagstaff to Los Angeles. Then 2 + hours the Coast Starlight to Martinez, Ca. Lots of Trains and hopefully some pictures to check latter.

I took the Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rockies to Vancouver, BC from Calgary, Alb., Canada. The scenery was breath-taking. I then took VIA back to Edmonton, BC and the trip was equally exciting. I would highly recommend it.

Went to National Transportation Museum in Green Bay Wisc. What a thrill to see A-B-A F's in IC's passenger colors. The 4017 was my 1st big boy. And way cool, a Milw FM switcher pulled the day's train. Also, the static passenger cars including a dome and old sleeper were open to walk thru!! The staff was very freindly and my child in a wheelchair was able to ride the train, a lift got him into the baggage section of the combine. What a view from the open doors. A fun day. --Don

They have a restored depot there with a nice model train layout in the basement. Also went to the National Transportation Museum in Green Bay. Still planning to get to the Illinois Railway Museum.

WENT TO STEAMTOWN IN SCRANTON PA. WENT ON LOCO REPAIR SHOP TOUR, SAW 0-6-0 HAVING CROWN SHEET REBUILDING. ALSO SAW 2-8-2 GETTING NEW TIRES ON DRIVE WHEELS BEFORE HAVING NEW BEARINGS INSTALLED
