fan-made roads

  • ok how many of you made up your own railroad with your own color scheme, roster, etc? i'm guilty of it. mine is Midwestern Central. i use michael eby's drawings on www.trainiax.net to paint my units. but i'm still experimenting with some colors.

    anyhoo, anyone else have their own made-up railroad?

  • I have one, not modeled in any gauge, but I "model" the Allegheny & Lake Erie Railroad, which is made up of the NYC Pennsylvania division south/west of Avis,PA to Ashtabula,OH, splitting at the shop town of Brookville, home of Brookville Locomotive & Equipment. A&LE having their shops there made sense to me! The other leg of the A&LE brought it into Pittsburgh on what is PRR trackage, but A&LE parallelled it from Red Bank into Pittsburgh. To add to the fun, I had assigned the PRR Chautauqua line from Red Bank to Niagara Falls NY, with a largely fictional link from Buffalo to Niagara Falls. The A&LE would have been allied with the Lehigh Valley, using some of their trackage, and vice versa from the A&LE's(fictional) Willet Rd. yard up to Lehigh and Lake Erie Junction to Niagara Junction, then on the LV Niagara Falls Branch up to (fictional) TC tower in Tonawanda, where they would meet the A&LE's (fictional) Passenger and local freight line from downtown Buffalo, parallell to the NYC Niagara Falls branch. Then they would run up north through North Tonawanda to Niagara Falls on a fictional line that would merge into the NYC to access the NYC's downtown depot, and then up to the Suspension Bridge area of the "Falls", where the A&LE passenger trains would have terminated. The A&LE freights would have run into a yard next to the LV's in the Monteagle section of the Falls. Post 1964, the A&LE and LV would have shared the yard the LV had in the north east part of the Falls, just east and north of NYC/PC/Conrail's yard. I won't go into the same detail about the rest except to say that the A&LE would have wound up in Conrail on April 1, 1976. The power of the A&LE is my main interest with a steam roster culminating in copies of D&H (and Clinchfield but, before them. A&LEs would have been built in 1940 and 41) 4-6-6-4s for Williamsport-Ashtabula/Pittsburgh trains, and AMC Berks for the line to Buffalo/Niagara Falls. Diesels would have been largely EMDs (NW2s,SW7s,8s and 9s, F3s,F7s, an F9,GP7s, SD9s and E7s. The second generation would have been all EMD: GP35s,SD35s,GP38s,GP39s, SD40s and GP38-2s) with some Baldwins (VO1000s, Post war DS4-4-1000s,S12s, RS12s, DRS4-4-1500s,DRS6-6-1500s, DR4-4-1500s-both "baby face" and "sharks"-RF16s, AS16s, RT624s and AS616s) thrown in. The "Chautauqua Special",Niagara Falls-Pittsburgh, would have been the A&LE's prime passenger train, with through pullmans to the famed Chautauqua institution from A&LE's north-south terminals. There would have been a post war streamliner Niagara Falls-Pittsburgh for which the Es would have been bought, but it likely would have been dumped in the early 60s.
  • ah sweet. mine is still pretty new. though currently it's a huge railroad. what Midwestern Central basically is is the new top railroad. in 2010, Atmonomian Track Runners was formed. it was a mere 5 GP60s and 4 ex WC SD45s. starting its life as a small shortline in Wisconsin where it went on ex WC track CN had abandoned. it was quite efficient and soon made a LOT of business. the road quickly aquired a lot of money from all its success in transporting freight. in 2012, a few other shortlines expressed interest in merging with ATR (there were many reasons. i dont feel like naming them off now). these mergers, though small, allowed for ATR to gain much more track and locomotive power. it now had track in not only Wisconsin, but Minnesota and Iowa as well. it was for this reason and merging with other shortines that ATR changed its name to the Midwestern Central Railroad. in 2013, MWC purchased numerous (i dont know the exact number) miles of track near the mississippi river from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as well as bought 10 ex SOO line SD60s from the Canadian Pacific Railroad. 5 of which were repainted in MWC colors. the other 5 were repainted in fresh SOO colors, one of the MWC's most famous and liked ideas. following that, other MWC locomotives received fallen flag paint schemes. sort of like a repeat of the UP heritage stuff only magnified and expanded upon. this earned the respect of many raifans and shortlines and led to even more mergers. in 2015, MWC was large enough to be called a class I railroad. though not as large as the other class Is. this stirred up interest in the Union Pacific Railroad as they always love the smell of fresh blood. they began attempting to buy out MWC. all seemed lost in the following month until BNSF and CP made swift moves and sold small portions of them to MWC, making it bigger than UP. upon the acquisition of these portions, MWC bought out UP. 75% of UP's fleet was repainted in MWC colors or patched. in 2020, MWC further expanded upon its own heritage ideas and actually brought several fallen flags back as regionals and shortlines. restored at track they used to operate as well. DRGW, MoPac, CNW, WC, SP, even UP, were restored. though now considered subdivisions of MWC. in 2025 (which will be the "nowadays" of this history), MWC works closely with BNSF and CP to expand and continue to improve railroad transportation and continues to move freight across America.


    i guess in short, MWC is "friends" with BNSF and CP as they usually make big decisions together and what not. they also use each others' track frequently

    kinda makes me wish a class I would do that

  • the hell they did. i'm looking at MWC SD45s right now! shame that MWC cant restore DMIR since CN owns them
