Road Trip Suggestions Needed! Naperville, IL to Horseshoe Curve

  • Hi all! I need your help! I'm planning a road trip from Naperville IL (Western Chicago Burbs) to Horseshoe curve, PA. What are the best places to stop along the way? Any resources for photo locations? My guesses are: Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown and Pittsburgh. We want the best photos in safe areas where the Railroad police won't arrest. Thanks for your help

  • 1. Porter, IN
    2. Berera, OH
    3. Pittsburg
Those would be the best bet.

If you dont want a hard time stay clear of Youngstown and Cleveland. Besides, not much left in Youngstown expect Mingo Jct. I would say Pittsburgh is must, I'm going to college in Pittsburgh and would call it the hidden gem of the east (Between NS, CSX, URR, AVR, BLE, WLE I would say about 125+ trains pass throught the city daily). I could give all sorts of great spots if you wanted.
  • Definently stop in Pittsburgh. I've been there for business for several weeks in the past few months and there is plenty of activity to keep you busy. Its just a matter of switching from generally straight roads around Chicago to the anything but straight roads around Pittsburgh. It took me a day or two to adjust. Stop by Conway Yard north of P-town in the town of, believe it or not, Conway. There really aren't many good spots because a main road runs right next to it and the Ohio River is right on the other side. Theres a bridge over the south throat of the yard, NS owned keep in mind, but no one bothered me the couple times I was there. Towards the north end of the yard the towns are built on the hills going up from the river so you can go up them to get a view down into the yard. As for Pittsburgh itself, its a gold mine of little spots to watch trains, you just have to find them. I've done quite a bit of wandering around to find the spots I have.
Heres a link to some of the pictures I took while I was out there.

And one for the Johnstown area, southwest of Altoona.
