  • There is a spur track off of the outer main on the left hand screen. I have never seen a train use this track. Does anyone know what it is for and if it is even used?

  • Just last week I saw a freight back in there that appeared to be hauling lumber. I, too, was curious and found a satellite image of the area at the following link: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=portland,+oregon&ll=45.494608,-122.644984&spn=0.005798,0.011351&t=k&om=1

To help orient you when viewing the satellite image, the bridge seen in 'Train North' webcam at western.com is at the top-center of the image.

Sorry I don't have more info.

  • Do you remember which day it was and what time of day? I just wanna see a train go down there [:D]

I scrolled .. maaaan the big yard is where the camera should be!!! This is just a puny little thing compared to that yard thats further down the line!

  • I'm not positive when I saw the train back down the siding, but I think it was last Saturday morning (April 29th). It was definately a Saturday or Sunday.

Whenever it took place, what I saw was the UP switchers pull a string of cars out of the yard and onto the main. After sitting on the main for a while, they started backing down the main. I couldn't figure out where they were headed, which is what prompted me to search Google maps until I found the yard. Eventually they backed down the siding out of view.

I agree, that is a big yard and what we see with those two cameras is not a large part of the action. Yesterday there were passenger cars (maybe domes) in the yard. Wish I had time to see what that was all about.

  • OHHHH you missed it man!!!! I saw it!!

This old SP high hood unit with a working oscillating head light pulls these 3 RDC Budd cars out of somewhere and backed them into another track!!

Seeing that was awesome! By the yard was that if you go north there is a much bigger yard!! This yard is tiny compared to this other yard aff to the north.

  • Wow, that must have been great to see. You must not have believed what you were seeing. I seriously thought I saw RDC's, but the train was sitting off in the distance and couldn't stay and watch. I definately say the oscillating headlight. Thanks for filling me in on the details.

Next time I see a train using the siding off to the left, I'll be sure and note the time and date.

  • The switchers are working in the siding right now. Today is Friday around 8:48 am central here, so I guess it's 6:48 there.

I saw an old high hood SP unit coupled with another unit the other night. Don't know if it was the same one though (it was the trailing unit).
  • Hey, that's terrific!
  • 1750 Mountain time ... they backed into the siding there.
    Yay I finally saw it!!

  • Congrats. I'm watching now as well.

Now if those RDC's would just make another appearance....
