Is it possible to note an engine number and then follow it, online, where ever it travels?

It would also be possible to monitor radio communication and get the train symbol during the interchange. With a list of train symbols and destinations you could then determine its start and end points. Some freights are timetabled also and keep petty regular times at certain points so you may be able to determine destinations in that manner also.
