I recalled seeing GG1 Locomotives and heavyweight coaches in yards from along the Northeast Corridor in 1985 up until 1989

Only those privately owned or at operating museums. At least in the US anyway.

Not to haul passengers. There might have been a few heavyweight baggage cars being used by Amtrak, but I doubt it. In the eighties you could find a few still being used in Maintenance-of-Way service. I remember seeing BN running some GN cars still in green and orange "Empire Builder" paint in 1984. One was a woodsided baggage car if I remember correctly !!

I was looking thru John Armstrong's "Creative Layout Design" book, he mentions in there that the last heavyweight cars used in commuter service (the last service they were used for) were retired in 1981.

They most likly place would be listed under privatly owned passenger cars many of which are available for charter or short term lease. A google search should provide this info with out too much trouble. There may still be some in MOY service on smaller lines.

A fair number of the private cars actually being used are heavyweights, complete with six-wheel trucks. I don't think that there are too many left in M/W service, either. Although M/W cars are non-interchange and not subject to AAR age restrictions, there is still a age limit based on availability of parts to keep them operable.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
