diesel powered steam?

  • does anybody think the following is possible:

take a steamer, put a diesel/electric plant in the tender, use the power to run a large cmpressor in the firebox, use the compressor to pressurize the boiler, and voila, pseudo-steam.

  • Air won't do the job. Steam is much more powerful than air

  • Why not do what Stone Mountain Scenic did. They took an SW1 and put a "baggage car" over it, then let it push a "live" steamer ahead of it. This worked for a number of years. The SW1 has since moved on, now with a lower cab working for an industrial operator.
  • Complicated and whats the point?

Why would you do this when you could simply have an oil-fired boiler?

  • This has been on the boards for years, abeit not in your proposed manner. There are plans for an electric boiler system that uses a small deisel electric generator in the tender.

The idea being that the generator would use very little fuel to produce the electricity that would heat the water up to pressure. Unfortunatly, since it still uses water, this would require a water tender as well, since most lines don't have adiquate watering stations.
