Unusual Train Sightings

  • I am looking out my office building in Atlanta, GA and see an unusual sight. Its a NS engine, Conrail engine and Santa Fe engine waiting to enter a small yard. I've also seen NS and UP, as well as, NS and BNSF. Any of you guys see retired roads out there servicing your areas?

  • I don't know about retired roads??? But forign power is common on all of the class 1s. It's not unusual at all.
  • well, I recently saw MPEX 5000 as the second unit in CSX' Q377-18 WB into then out of Buffalo NY. Its a wreck rebuild of an SD45 or SD50, with non-standard flared radiators, if it was an SD50. MPI calls it an SD50M-3. The engineer told me the "oddball" did OK. It was still in DM&E blue and cream. I also recently saw a Super7-30C from Mexico's TFM in an eastbound. The conductor of that job was extremely glad to be off that unit! He described it as being beyond filthy![xx(]

  • I've seen former milwaukee road units with brand new SD70's and other newer units.
    I have aslo seen colorful lash ups like a Santa FE SD70, SD60 Oakway, and a BN SD60M.

  • James, BTW, the classifaction of the SD60's is SD60M, not SD60W.

  • Has anyone seen any Erie Lackawanna equipment in use?
  • Does anybody know when these foriegn power sightings started to become more common. Was there ever a time when seeing a locomtive from another railroad a unque sighting?
  • Basicly when the diesel took over. In steam days most locomotives were purchased for a specific service and were build specificly to be most suited to those services. Back then it was rare for a loco to run on another railroads tracks, but it did happen. For the most part steamers were also assigned to certain divisions within a railroad. The diesel on the other hand was basicly the same general unit (like F7,GP9 etc.) no matter what railroad owned it and could usualy do many different jobs that in steam days were done by specific units / classes.

    There is string (5-6) EL hoppers being used in MoW work on the NS in Pittsburgh. The cars, along with 2-3 in Penn Central paint have been sitting in Island Ave. yard for a few weeks, I geuss they are waiting for the trackwork season to being

  • Yesterday on my lunch break, I saw what looked like a Sperry Car, but it was painted in the UP "Building America" scheme with the large flag on the side. If only I had my camera...

    Yeah, Union Pacific has purchased some of those cars.
