Tehachapi Question

I live in LA (West Valley) and have never been to Tehachapi (The Loop). I have some days off of work this week and next and was going to make the trek before the kids get out of school for the Holiday. Is there a particular weekday or time of day that is better than others and besides the info on the Trains.com site are there any websites anyone can point me towards for help?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm not a hardcre railfan but want to head up there with a book, my ipod, my camera and chill in the hills watching the trains roll by for a few hours.
Thanks.
