GE U-6B's and U-8B's

  • I have been meandering around on the web looking for information on the differences between the GE U-6Bs and the U-8B's of the late 1960's. I rode on both, but don't have any real info on the difference. I found a spec sheet on the 6B, but can't find one on the 8B. The ones I rode were operated by the Hoa Xa Viet Nam in the Republic of South Vietnam in 1967-1968. Anybody know where to find a spec sheet on the 8B? Or, if somebody knows the difference, let me know? My totally uninformed guess would be that they took out the Cat D-379 engine (700 hp, in the 6B) and put in something else, but they were otherwise mechanically similar. Is that true? I know they built 116 6B's and 104 8B's

  • A good place to look for the differences between U6B's and U8B's and about GE export designs as a whole would be:

Phil Wormald has amassed a lot of information on that site.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
  • Sorry about my previous post, I was just mad at wctransfer! I think the difference does have something to do with the horse power though. NO, I didn't write twice to star chase!

Thanks, I was able to find what I needed on "Phil's Loco Page." It has, however, moved and is now www.locopage.net.

The difference was HP - the 6B's had 700 hp Cat D-379s (8 cyl) and the 8B's had 900 hp Cat d-398s (12 cyl).
