Railfan Question: Toledo hotspots

  • Hello:
Does anyone know any places for railfanning in or around Toledo, OH that:
    1. Have a fairly high train density, and
    2. Are fairly safe (I won't get mugged, arrested, etc.)

I'm not picky as to whether we're talking CSX, NS, or whatever.

    Thanks

  • There are many places around Toledo, Oh to railfan that are safe and on public property. I would suggest you get a city map of Toledo and a map of the surronding area.

Locations that might prove interesting: Vickers Interlocking where CSX and NS cross. You will see NS, CSX and CN. Also in this area is CSX's Walbridge and Stanley Yard. These two locations are located near the following roads: Wales, Broadway and Walbridge. There is a park in the town of Walbridge that had a hill that allows viewing trains enter and exit Walbridge yard.

The Ann Arbor Railroad and CN's Lang Yard are located on the North side of Toledo in the area around I-75 and Alexis Rd.

Again your best bet is to get some maps of the Toledo area. Your trip should prove fruitfull. I recommend satying away from the NS ex Conrail line through downtown, especially the area around the old Airline Yard. Not a good neighborhood and photo opportunities are poor. Lots of trains but no real place from public property to photo.

  • My suggestion is going to Swanton, OH. It's about 20 minutes or so West of Toledo on Airport Hwy. You'll see that if you go into Swanton there is a little park with a Caboose. That is usually where I go to watch trains. And if you dont mind driving a little more, theres a little tiny town that goes by the name of Delta. Delta has an old train station that is used today by Norfolk Southern. When my dad and I go there, nobody bothers us and we can stand right on the old platform and just watch trains all day long.
  • wauseon also has a depot and museum where you can watch trains.another spot I noticed is along key lime rd in the toledo area. there is a csx transfer track where you might get some views. walbridge park is nice too.
