Different Types of Locomotives

  • Hello,

After looking around in my local hobby shop, I discovered that they have HO scale locomotives with a greater number of wheels (12) as opposed to the usual 8 wheels that come with most train sets.

What are the differences between the two?

Is a more powerful transformer required to get the most out of these models?

    Any product suggestions?

I appreciate the help. I am very new to the hobby. Thanks!

  • Model locomotives have 12 or 8 wheels to reflect the real locomotive that they represent.

All other things being equal, the 12 wheel version will not require any additional power to run at the same speed. The only difference that you'll notice in operation will probably be that a 12-wheel locomotive with all wheels powered will be able to move more cars than an equivalent 8-wheel locomotive.

If you're starting out, I'd recommend anything in the regular Athearn line for the most value for your dollar. The Athearn "Genesis" line are of superior looks and performance to the regular Athearns, but they're substantially more money.

  • Thanks for the help! That answers it.
  • If you have any questions about model railroading I would go to model railroader's general disscusion. The people there are very knowledgable and eager to answer questions.
