Train spotting in Omaha area

  • I'm heading off to Omaha in June and want to do some UP train watching. Any ideas of good places in and around Omaha? I figure it can't be too hard to find trains there, but I don't know the area. Thanks for any input.

  • Well, if you like to gamble you could hang out in the Harrah's Casino parking garage.

Seriously....I am from Lincoln and am not certain where a good specific viewpoint is, however, I am guessing on either side of the Missouri River bridge would be a good place. Maybe near the Western Heritage Museum????

    Hope you enjoy Nebraska,

  • Good spots are from the 10th St overpass near the Western Heritage Museum and from the Amtrak depot about 9th and Pacific.

For the yellow experience, take Dodge west to 168th . Exit north and take first left, then next right, that follows the UP to Elkhorn along the brick paved Lincoln highway. At Elkhorn get on Highway 31 North (the overpass) to Maple St. (highway 64). Go west to Waterloo and get on highway 275. Take the first exit and go to the south/left to Valley, NE. Follow the UP to Fremont. If that's not enough go west on Rt 30, which parallels the UP main.

For the green experience, take I-80 west to Gretna (highway 31) and go north to Highway 6 (left just past the outlet mall). that follows the BNSF all the way into Lincoln. SVLFever might be able to give you directions to the BNSF hump yard there.

  • And if you happen to be trailering or motorhoming or otherwise camping, the Gretna KOA is beautiful.
  • Thanks for the replies. I didn't even think about BNSF. Something else to look at!
