Weight of Spoke Train Wheel

  • I am looking to recover an old three spoked train wheel from the ocean and I would like to know the approximate weight.

It is about 3' to 4' in diameter and the spokes curve within the wheel.

    Thanks,

    John

  • Well let's see. Iron is roughly 1200# per cubic foot so a 3' diameter wheel would have a radius of 1.5' . Volume = pi x r squared x height. So if it was solid it would be 1.5x1.5x3.1416x .25 x 1200 = roughly 2000# but it isn't solid so if you can figure what percentage is solid say roughly 30% it should weigh around 600#, 20%=400#, 40% = 800# so I would guess 600# or less.
