Best modern diesel for a newbie?

  • Hi -

Does anyone have any suggestions - I'm looking to get my first diesel, and have a 072 layout (so I can accomodate most any length diesel).

Anyone have any thoughts on their favorite modern diesel and best one to start a new track with? SD, Dash, or U-boats? Or smaller?

In another post, I mention that I'm very under-impressed with Lionel's level of detailing, and think that Atlas did a fantastic job with their little GP-35's - I've got a N&W Steam 2-6-6-4 with a high amount of detailing, and would hate to sacrifice having this beautiful train next to a train that looks like a cheap toy (little detailing).

Any thoughts on good production engines?

    Thanks!

  • I would go with an ATlas switcher. Some of the original ones are still around in real life and the level of detail makes me consider giving up HO after 42 years.
  • kato...get a kato... costs a little more compared to most...but runs like a raped date...and is very well detailed.... once you go kato..you will never look at athren agin...lol
and if you go the big bucks to spend... go with broadway limited... i know a few people that some of thier stuff...very top notch...and the sound system kicks ***...lol

  • I agree with csxengineer98 100%. Kato is the only way to go if you don't mind spending a few extra dollars... I personally prefer the GE AC 4400 CW. If however you're in a situation where you have to watch your money (like me), I wouldn't go any less than Atlas or Con-Cor.
  • The only problem with the answers in the last two posts is that you didn't read the first post stating this is an 072 layout. He isn't in HO he is looking for O gauge answers.
  • Thanks for steering this back on course!

  • Sorry about over looking the scale involved. We HO and N scale people tend to forget sometimes that there are other scales out there...
  • oh my bad... forget what i said befor then.... your guess is now as good as mine as far as what is good and what is not in your scale....but if you ask me...i would put the big scale on a shelf and get into HO or N... has alot more equimpment avaliabe... and better looking equipment....and you can put more layout in smaller spaces....but is just me..lol
