Realistic track noise scenarios

Wondering what combination of track and roadbed gives the most realistic or most attractive train running sounds.
While testing a proposed layout I noticed that the Atlas EZ trac ( not my intended standard) was noisy but gave a realtistic clickety-clack -track noise as the wheels crossed over the many regular joints. A piece of flex track over cork roadbed (my intended layout standard) was much smother and quiter but I missed the rail joint sounds. I suppose I could notch the flex track rails but I am leary of adding more work and more derailment possiblitities.
[:D]Is this a legitimate question or am I just hearing things? I have not seen any articles about this before.
