  • I'm doing a project on trains. I have to create a school and i thought i would make it a train school. The train takes around a group of kids to different places in canada where they can learn about the things they see. I am doing the presentation as a proposal to make my teacher try to "buy" my idea. I need help with the facts of trains and things. How fast does a normal train go? Where are some good sites for me? How do I learn about approximate pricing ands things like that? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • ok I'll reply to your queston for ya :) If your interested in Canadian rail adventetors and, if your looking for secnery I would go to VIA Rail's web site. You can find prices and excursions on the site. I would also look at other shortlines or tourist railroads web sites in Canada to get some ideas on pricing, and scenery. I would also take a look at Amtrak's site just for ya to get a wider perspective of pricing and train routes. One idea about taking the kids to learn about the things they see on the train, is to take them to the Rocky Mountains on Canadian Pacific's "Kicking Horse Pass". That is a really beautiful and interesting route. The kids on the train can learn about the history of the rail line that runs through there, and they could learn about the geography, and history of the mountains. They could also learn about the people who lived in the area.

They second question you asked about how fast do trains go?/. It would depend on alot of factors. What kind of locomotives do u have on the train. What condition is the track in?/ What type of train are you hauling? What are the speeds the type of grades will permit?? What grade precentage is your route?? For passanger trains they typically are allowed to move faster than freight. Their speeds sometimes top off to 80 or more MPH. But tourest trains will run at mabe 30MPh or lower so the people can see the sights. Some train excursions will stop at a certain point of intrest and allow the passangers to get off and explore.

If you want to find out more about railroad operations I would purchase a book or what you can do is post this question in the Trains Mag forums. You'll get more of a responce on this topic.

please e-mail me of you need more help. :)

  • Jackyb: another place to go for all sorts of information on trains is RailroadData.com,
It gives information for over 5000 different railroad webpages, and can probably help you to find out more about trains there, than any where else.

  • I'd also consider making a list of where you want to go. I'd start in Sydney, Nova Scotia and work my way west having the train stop in the various cities and areas you wi***o see and have bus excursions to see Toronto and other areas. Years ago when I was in high school my band went to the Rose Bowl from Philadelphia and we rented a PRR train for the trip. It stopped in Chicago to see the Science and Industry Museum and several national parks so consider a special train also.
