Trains did an interesting article about the future of the boxcar. Evidently shippers want them, but builders are not getting many orders as they are expensive. It also appears that most cars today are of the plug door type. Can anyone explain the reason for the demise of the slide door? Thanks.

Expensive to maintain and don't provide the level of security customers and the carriers are looking for.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
I would think the plug doors would be more expensive to maintain, but they would be a lot better at protecting the interior contents from the elements.
