There were a lot of problems with the SD50,so it wasn't popular with the railroads that bought them.They are doing very well by selling the SD 70 MAC.

No reason to make an SD50MAC... it doesn't meet Tier II standards and the 50 series wasn't a general success overall...

That was a bad, bad, BAD series of engines. Does anybody know if any railroads have SD50-2's?

There was no SD50-2. The last loco that had a dash 2 was the SD40-2.The dash 2 line was inaugerated in 1972.The SD 50 and up were introduced after that date and included the dash 2 features.

What was the first unit to use the 710 engine? Was it the SD 50 or SD 60?

LOL. I agree with ya on this issue. The SD50 was a horrible locomotive and so was the SD45. That was EMD's weakest "inovation" I think. The problems these engines had w/ cranks going 24/7 were just down right terrible. Plus the SD50 dosen't even meat TEIR 1 emissions, I don't know how the "SD50MAC" is going to meet TEIR 2 EMISSIONS. This is so becuase, EMD might have to sick a 710G3C ES, under the hood rather than a modified 645F3B to meet TEIR 2 emissions. Then they might as well call it a SD70ACe.

No EMD doesn't sux. The only reason why GE is the leading producer of North American locomotives is because they are cheaper than the EMD locomotive. This is why many railroads' choice is GE. If a railroad buys a locomotive form EMD like the SD70MAC more of their money is upfront, than w/ a GE AC44CW because w/ the GE units the railroads spend more money in locomotive maintenece. I don't want to write GE off (because I like them too, and they do build good locos) but, you have to remeber GE has built some crapy locos in the past too.

My Alberta Pacific had 12 SD50MACs built experimentally at the end of their production. They then got the first mass produced AC units, SD60MACs.

How is the SD45 EMD's "weakest innovation, and horrible locomotive" There are still SD45s on the road today, on railroads including the Wisconsin Central, MONTANA RAIL LINk and various lease companys. The SD45s on the Montana Rail LInk pu***rains up a 2.2 percent grade through a tunnel, four times a day. THAT is abuse. Many of the MRL's helpers came from the Burlington Northern, Southern Pacific and even the Great Northern. Now, a lcomotive that can stand up to thirty years of such abuse deserves more than such a remark. I mean, how many GE's of that era do you see????????

Sorry about the long lecture, but I just think that SD45s are not EMD's mistake, but more like a genius idea.

The problem with the SD45 is that the 20 cylinder engine was a fuel hog.That,and the crankshaft would bend because the prime mover would sag after many years in service.The SD45 was such a good engine that SP bought 604 of them,including tunnel motors,plus 10 SDP45s.
