Inverter Failures?

  • Does anyone out there have info on how often an Inverter might fail on a Locomotive? I'm after data on both EMD and GE.

    Any info appreciated

  • Given the spartan attendance record recently in this forum, I would suggest posting in the trains mag forum.
  • I don't have any real data, but it is worth mentioning that the inverter used for HEP on the P32 DM units is the same as the traction inverters, and if the HEP unit fails, the loco is supposed to switch one of the traction inverters to HEP and run on the remaining three motors.

In the case of the SD70MAC, the Alaska units are designed to switch one "three motor" inverter to HEP when in passenger service, and feed four motors with the remaining unit.

So I guess I'm saying that the failure case has been planned for, but like all electronics, it's pretty reliable under normal conditions.
