Trains.com Index of Magazines

  • The Trains.com Index of Magazine (also know as the Model Train Magazine Index) is a free database of model railroad and prototype railroad magazines’ table of contents that dates back to the 1930s. (A link to the Index is at the very top of every page at Trains.com.) Do you ever use the Trains.com Index of Magazines?

Polls on Trains.com are not scientific and reflect only the opinions of the users who have chosen to participate. The results cannot be assumed to represent the opinions of Internet users in general, the readers of our magazines, nor the public as a whole. Bottom line, our polls are meant for fun and to stimulate conversation amongst our forum users.

  • I use it every once and a while. Usually to find something specific in Trains or Model Railroader.
  • It really helps when researching before starting a modeling project. Just wi***hat once you located the article there was a way that you could then download it and print it our. I'd be willing to pay for that capability.
  • Ditto to the first two posts. I use it all, and I mean all the time of the above reasons. I usually preview the issues then at a library near me that has all of the old issues, and if I like it, I look for it to buy it. I must use the index 2-3 times a week. I too would be willing to pay a fee to be able to download the article.

  • I have to agree with the above comments... I've been using it for what seems like 5 or 6 years even back when it was hosted on Accurail's site. I usually use it 3 to 4 times a week, sometimes a lot more. I guess I'm lucky in some ways. For the issues that are not in my personal collection, the model railroad club that I belong has a extensive magazine collection that goes all the way back to MR #1. But there are holes in other publictions. Where a pay down load of the article would help considerbally.

  • I actully never knew it existed.
  • I voted no as I have never used it. When I am looking for information I usually go to other sites, but it is interesting to know of ots existance, and it's there when I need it.
  • I never looked at the bar that high up on the page probably because that is where most of the advertisement is found so I don't look there. Now that I know it is there I will probably use it, maybe even a lot. Thanks!
  • I use it quite often when looking for information when researching background for my activities for MSTS. It is a lot faster than going through 40 years worth of Trains mag's by hand that I have.

A suggestion, please add the old Pacific Rail news mag to the database. I have searched the web looking for one for it and cannot find it.

  • I never had a clue it existed, but it sounds like something worth looking into!
  • It would be nice if this was available on CD, for clubs with a computer but no internet connection.
  • I use it frequently. It's been a big help in tracking down information for specific modeling projects. I ,too, would be willing to pay a fee to be able to download the articles.

  • I use it... but sometimes it is tough to get the right combination of search words that get a hit. At times I remember a specific article, but not the month or year... and it is frustrating when using the index I can not pull it up. Sometimes the keywords (when I finally find the article) are surprising to me.
  • I use it from time to time when answering questions here on the forums. I have an extensive library, and will often go and read the articles located by the search.
