Alot of trains pass through this yard.An average day sees 120 trains,50-55 of these are car loads, along with 50 coal trains that pass through here as well.10,000 cars are passed through the yard daily, but only 3000 are humped into the bowl of tracks. As for the train symbols,I am guessing that once a train comes into Bailey Yard the existing symbol is void, and then a new one is set up after doing switching. The coal trains and "hot shots"(intermodal),along with dedicated freights are run through without any switching at all, example Chicago -L.A. .Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Andrew
