1940-1950s' train travel from Chicago to Omaha etc.

  • I am looking for a video that showed that you could travel throughout Illinois, Iowa and to Omaha, Nebraska easily on trains.  It showed multiple lines throughout Iowa and Illinois.  It also emphasized how manufacturing would be eliminated over the years if passenger train travel were eliminated.  And, this was a video made by the railroad industry.   It was shown on the farm channel about two years ago.

Here in California we are getting more mass transit and trains all the time.   I would like to get this video to show our politicians the benefits of having good transit to not only transport goods but to also transport people.   Everything shown in the video about the negative effects of eliminating passenger trains has come about in eliminating our manufacturing base in smaller communities etc.

Anyone know were I can get this video, please let me know.  Thanks.

I would enjoy seeing the old video, too.

But more passenger trains won't cure what's wrong with the economy in California.  Do you believe that the expansion of passenger train service in California will have a major effect on the continued disappearance of manufacturing here, or that if that if the transit network of years-ago had been maintained then the industries wouldn't have left in the first place?

Public policy in Sacramento has led to a situation in which the nation's largest state, once an economic powerhouse, now has a poor business climate, a virtually insolvent government, one of the highest unemployment rates, a huge share of the nation's welfare cases, and leadership which seems to remain in denial as the situation spirals downward.

Passenger trains (subsidized with non-existent extra taxpayer money) won't solve this mess.

If I ever met a train I didn't like, I can't remember when it happened!
  • Rather prophetic, I guess.  But I suspect that what happened is only correlation, not causal.    I used to get that Farm Channel on DISH and used to watch those rail videos, but I don't recall that one.

The program was shown on RFD TV and the one you referred to was:

Omaha Rail Metropolis on the Plains, hosted by Westbrook Van Voorhees, (1953).
