Sweapstakes

  • In the official rules of every sweapstakes here, and on a lot of others in other forums or web sites, there's this mention that says: Opened to residents of the United States and Canada (except Quebec).

Why is it always except Quebec?[censored] I can never participate because that's where I live, and it really makes me sad because I'm just as any other members of this forum [sigh]. That they don't include all the countries of the world is one thing (I had to mention because I know there are a lot of folks here that are not from the US or Canada) but to exclude one province of one of the country in the sweapstake?

    WHY? [xx(]

  • I think that it may have something to do with the language laws. There must be a lot of legal red tape or they might have to have everything in French as well or something. I know that Quebec has some certain laws that only apply to them. I'm quite sure that the reason for this rule in the sweepstakes is not because they have something against Quebec. It would be interesting to know the exact reason, though. Do you by chance have any relatives or friends that live outside of Quebec that could enter these sweepstakes for you?
  • Neerie,
Although I do not know specifically what the restriction is, almost surely it is something that the province of Quebec requires that the sweepstakes sponsors can not or choose not to do. Even within the United States, some sweepstakes or types of sweepstakes are restricted from certain states. I have seen exclusions listing New Jersey, Delaware, and one or two mid-western states over the years.

Language laws is the extact reason.

If they wanted to offer the sweepstakes in Qubec, all the rules and contest information would have to be provided in French AND English, because this would cost a lot of extra time and money it is easier just to exclude Quebec and welcome everyone else.

This is Quebecs fault, as it is their own Law that everything in the province has to be bilingual  ........

    Too bad.
  • While we're at it does anyone know why Vermont residents can omit postage on things with sweepstakes?
  • There is plenty of room out here in BC -- and we don't have bilingual road signs!! _ When are you coming ? Although we don't have BC Rail any more -- Just CN !
