Amtrak F40PHs still in service?

  • Just out of curiosity, are any Amtrak F40PHs still in service, or have they all been taken out and replaced with the newer General Electric locomotive line? I haven't seen any Amtrak F40PHs in a while.

  • The only evidence of anything remotely resembling an F40 I see through our town on Amtrak are a few of the shells being used as cab control cars on some trains (such as the Illinois Zephyr sometimes but rarely lately) to eliminate wyeing ot the trains in Quincy, IL

  • Yes, F40PHs were all retired in 1999 or 2001.
  • I am very surprised that several railroads didn't upgrade to them for their executive trains. They have to be easier to obtain parts for than the old BN E9's everybody seems to be using.
  • CSX is leasing 2 F40PH's from Amtrak for its executive trains. Several others have been leased or sold to commuter authorities and several wound up on Canadian-American Railroad after being rebuilt for freight service.
    The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
  • There are 2 in Albany, NY being stored and will be used if Amtrak has a motive power shortage.
  • Caltrain recently purhased three (?) for upgrading with SD60 innards and use in the California commuter service, and Grand Canyon Railway purchased two or three to back up the Alco units it uses primarily.
