U.P. 2665 SD45-2

  • Good Day To All!!!

On a recent trip to the Roseville, Ca. locomotive service facility, I encountered #2665- an ex Southern Pacific SD45 on the service tracks.  One thing about this was that in Union Pacific practice, the model # of the locomotive is listed below the locomotive #(2665).  The reporting marks state that this is this an SD40-2.  Is this an actual SD40-2 in an SD45 body or is this an error on the U.P.'s part?  I have photographs and can send them if anyone is interested....

     Thanks,

    Duffy

  • This unit is a SD40-2 since it was rebuilt.  It might have been classiified as a SD40-3 when it was rebuilt for the former SP/D&RGW at some vendor, not the company shops.   They had 150 units rebuilt that were SD40's, SD45's and other variations of what could be purchased along with some of their own SP units.  All are 3000 HP models and are now classified as SD40-2 since they have been modifed with -2 electronics and have the 3000 HP engine.

None of the orginal SD45's engines were retained, but the car body is intact for any of the SD45's that were rebuilt and at that time received the new speed lettering for the SP.
