Digital or Analog Radio Communications

  • Does anyone know positively if any of the Major Class I RR's plan on going to digital communications with Dispatching?

I am looking to invest in a new scanner and do not want to purchase analog if the RR's are going to go digital anytime soon....

Thanks for any input on this matter..

  • I am sure that eventually the major RRs will move to digital, but not antime soon.    There is no plan to use digital for the move to 12.5 kHz channels, but when the FCC requires 6.25 kHz channels digital will be required.  I would think that means 2013 or later.   The plan right now is for the railroads to use NXDN as the standard digital format.   I'm not aware of any scanners that offer this format.
