A question from my own heart. The GM GP59 has the 12V710 Series EMD two cycle Diesel mechanical injection engine. The first entry of 3250hp would be the flywheel hp rating. The second entry is the rated locomotive hp. delivered under full load, with maybe a 8% dribble factor, showing on the computer. Ex. 3015hp. Remember the GP40 (16V645) was rated 3300hp at the flywheel, 3000 rated locomotive horsepower. The "parisitic" power loss reflects aux. generator, air compressor drives, and turning the main alternater. The only production GP59's are the NS #"s 4609-4641, all of which(including the #4610, painted in Sylvan green and Imitation aluminum), were built single controller equipped, mounted sideways for easier operation, set up long hood forward. EMD built three demos' two short hood forward, one long hood forward, which became #s 4606-4609
