Southern Indiana's B&O Line

  • What is the status of the old B&O line across southern Indiana?  What is the activity of the line from Cincinnati to Mitchell and from Mitchell to St. Louis?  What are CSX's long-term plans for the line?

  • Welcome. This forum isn't used as much as the Trains Magazine General Discussion. To get there click on Trains.com Forums and go to the Trains Magazine General Discussion site. Or I could get you a link to a really good Indiana forum if you like.   Joe
  • The portion between Cincinnati and Seymour there are between 1 and 4 trains a day. All of these trains run westbound and then turn south on the LIRC, the Louisville and Indiana Railroad. The only train currently running between Seymour and Mitchell is a weekday local and an occasional run through freight. There is now or soon will be only 2 or so trains from St. Louis, as CSX is going to kick all but one freight off of the south end of the monon. The trains other than the local coming from the west would turn south on the monon. I am not sure of CSX's long term plans for the line.
  • I know most of the St. Louis trains come up from Evansville and at Vincennes IN .  take a new  Wye to the left on the Old B&O line .

East of Vinncennes IN , to Mitchell there are several new Coal mines and at Washington there is alot of interchange with the Indiana Southern Railroad .

The latest I have heard the CSX plans to keep this line open as a secondary mainline .
