PRR & VGN

  • There was an interchange between the PRR and the VGN in Norfolk Virginia.  Does anybody know (I am not looking for speculation) what was interchanged between the two railroads there?  I assume the bulk of VGN freight was headed to the Captain Edward Richardson car float to cross Chesepeake Bay to the Delmarva penisula.

  • "The Book", The Virginian Railway by H. Reid states on page 83  that in 1929  "In the east, a new interchange point was made at Coleman Place in Norfork with the Pennsylvania Railroad's entering the southern side of Chesapeake Bay from Eastern Shore."

    Also on page 197, 1929: under new construction,  "Connecting and Interchange tracks with Pennsylvania Railroad at Coleman Place near Norfolk, Va.

  • Yeah but what was exchanged?  I assume agircultural products heading south from the Delmarva peninsula and possibly Dupont chemicals But the only thing northbound would possibly be coal off the VGN.
  • When the #700 Triplex was a failure, "the book" refers to returning it to Baldwin for a re-build by "barging" it to the Pennsylvania connection. (It was re-built into a 2-8-8-0 AND a 2-8-2, both returned to long service life)
