New photography equipment?

  • I'm going to try it out by getting a disposable digital camera.
  • Wife bought me a Canon Rebel TI SLR film camera in September. Checked into lenses, don't need a close up for MRR, need a Tripod, lights for shooting indoors and would like a long lens that can get closeup when I'm not.

I'm set for now, but sure am glad that Canon advertised in Trains on the back cover and my wife thought that a "hint" - wasn't but am happy she got it for me. Much better than having her waste money on something I could care less about having or had no desire to own.

The question is, $300-600 worth of lens or the same amount on Kato trains... I'd rather have the trains, do. The E8A/B, and Budd cars in ATSF, and Amtrak P42x2 with Superliners. Hands down!
  • very possably want to be able to see what i shoot.
  • I would like to go digital, but I want one with a hot shoe so I can use a flash on a long cord, and the capability to shoot esisting light on a tripod at slot shutter speeds ahd large lens opening. At this time those are a bit much for a retiree.

  • I still prefer my Nikon FM2 and my fixed 35mm, F2.0 & 85mm fixed lenses for my preferred time of year to photograph trains---winter!
I also have a Nikon N6006 with it's 50mm lens for people pictures (mostly).
I wonder what would happen to one of those nice new digital cameras if one took them out when the air temp was 10 above and the wind chill 15 below??
Of course poverty prevents me from making any serious changes to equipment anyway.

  • Last xmas I'd been pretty good to Mrs. Santa and we struck a deal. I had to take all old Canon 35 SLR stuff, F-1, A-1, 7 lenses, scads of filters etc, the whole sebang and sell en mass. Everything! Then with proceeds in hand shop for best deal on new Canon EOS 1V, complete with 3 EF-USM-IS lenses, 1.4 converter,550EX flash, verticle grip, angle finder C,DB-E2 Date Back, plus eyecup, timer remote controler, and some other stuff. Even haf to get much larger Lo-Pro bag. Well now the total was stiff. To get all I still had to go sell two very fine firearms. Got the EOS and what a piece of equipment. Other guns have gone now so this year I get the other necessary item, a sort of second body. A Canon EOS1 D. All lenses etc. fit the SLR and the digital. Mrs. Claus is my navigator/note keeper and we'll get out soon to shoot winter rails, and my real job, general aviation photography.
Hope to see ya trackside, somwhere.

  • I would only like to add a lens or two to go with a Canon A-1 manual for B&W, a Canon EOS 5 for slide and a Canon 6.3 MP EOS 10D for digital. Currently use a Tamron F2.8 28-105mm, Canon F1.8 50mm, Canon F2.8 70-200 and Canon F4 300mm with the EOS cameras, and a Canon F1.8 50 mm, Tokina 28-85 and Tokina F4 800-200 with the A-1. So I'd like to upgrade a bit for the A-1, but torn because I'm shooting less and less B&W. At some point, I'd also consider replacing the Tamron for my two EOS with a Canon 28-135 Image Stablization lens. Could probably do an even trade, but might have to consider something wider as the 10D processor conversion makes 28mm appear more like 45mm.

  • I've been using Nikon equipment since the 50s, and probably will replace my current medium tele zoom with one of the new G lenses... lighter, if not any faster or sharper than present 80-200. I shoot landscapes and flowers in addition to train scenes. Hesitant about adding a digital setup as filing is so much more labor intensive; time I prefer to use working on printing from my rather large slide collection. But for those occasions when traveling light takes precedence, might consider a Nikon 5700, a most versatile digital camera with a long zoom, plus 5 mp. Getting on a plane with a full film camera bag is too much of a hassle now, but the 5700 and two small add-ons, a wide angle and tele attachment, makes for an extremely versatile setup in a small package, with detail fine enough to print 8x10s that are the equal of any film camera.
  • The only thing I would realy like is a very high end (6+) and fast digital still camera. If the prices ever get down to the affordable range I would seriously consider it. A digital camcorder is really needed so I can easier imput into my PC to make movies.
  • My wish was to buy a new camera and lens, but the high costs this time wouldn't let it be possible, so my old one have to hang around one more year.
  • Nope. I have a Sony Cyber-shot digital camera and a Pentax 35mm land camera and tripod. No need to upgrade at this time.
  • I got several rolls of film, although mostly prints. I did get three rolls of slide film.
  • Well,

Santa dropped off that Canon Digital Rebel the other day, and I've had a chance to play around with it. Wow! 6.3 megapixels, interchangeable lenses, and I'm a happy boy. Here's a tiny version of a photo I shot this weekend:
