WHOS THE NEXT MEGA MERGER

  • I have heard alot of talk about the BNSF-NS merger. It would form the BS(Burlington Southern) railway. Hey, but who knows, and yes I think Conrail should have bought the CSX&NS! The NS sucks, there paintschemes are UGLY IN CAPITOL LETTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the other hand I like the new CSX dark future.

  • It will never happen.No more mega mergers for one reason.Stockholders.Are they getting good return on investment now?Nope.Being told sorry we dont have the capital to do these projects so most of our dividends are eaten up cause we are so huge.I believe Railroads will have to split up to remain in buisness.Who is sick of hearing "we cant handle it"I mean come on BNSF up pricing (raising rates basicly)to discourage buisness cause they are at the breaking point!?!?!?Makes sense to me guys make two mega roads that run all class IIs out of buisness and wham no more rail.Cause how is just coal and containers going to sustain them when they have no loose car traffic because more secondary lines will be lost followed by buisnes they dont want(ie not point to point one commodity)and then when stockholders sell out cause rail stocks are not worth it.

    On that, the feds should break them up. Just like the "Baby Bells." In fact, break them up back to their, I don't know, 1930 levels. Revive the old roads, too. Great Northern, NP, Milwaukee Road, Western Pacific, Rio Grande, hey everybody would be back! I'd settle even for 1950. Give em plenty of money for rebuilding all those lost main lines, and it'll be nothing but peaches and cream for a few years. A RAILFAN RENNASANCE!
  • Mergers. . . . humm. . . There were so many in the past years I can't keep track of all of them. Tell ya the truth I'm alittle sick of mergers. The next thing ya know METRO or SEPTA will be mergind w/ Amtrak or something. BUT! If there was to be a merger I would vote for CSX/UP, that will be one huge, gigantic, colossial class 1 RR.

  • Maybe Rail America, Genesee and Wyoming and the state and provincially owned shortlines should merge to become a class 1 railroad. If all the shortlines came together and just built some rail here and there to connect them, you would have one very powerful class 1 railroad that just needs to have better power than crappy old Alcos, GEs and EMDs.

  • Well i think the BN and SF merger was a good deal now. I notice here in Becker the past few days alot BNSF engines have a few NS engines hooked up to them too so maybe that is a sign. KCS would give them more tracks and would butt them up close with UP then. How about BNSF and CP rail comming together?
  • Now that CN has IC, why not CN + KCS? Everyone thinks east-west but maybe the north-south mergers aren't finished yet. Then maybe UP goes after CP, that would be interesting. Finally CSX + CSX, but then they discover they've already done that [:)] [:D] [:D]
