  • Boy, I'm gone a week on vacation and I miss a lot! Looks like most of everything has been covered or corrected by the experts in the place here already though.

Nice pictures Matt, as usual. Too bad most of what you catch is just a parade of CP ES44s and AC4400s, with the occasional SD90MAC thrown in. I like the 90MACs, but the others just seem kind of boring to me, even when I see them around my neck of the world. I don't know what it is, but I just don't really care for them. They are still neat photos, but they could look even better with a little bit different motive power...

Nice shots from you too James. I can tell Byron Hill right off the bat too, it's not hard if you are familiar with Wisconsin or the WC at all. I've only been their once in person, but I got a few shots there myself:

You'll like the XTI too. It's the camera I've got, and it works pretty good (although it didn't take either of the two shots above). What sort of lenses are you getting (or have) for it?

Like I said, I was on vacation the last week or so. My dad has a cousin that lives in San Francisco (right on the crooked street if you know what that is), and so we go about every other year to see them. I managed to squeeze in a little bit of railfanning time at Jack London Square in Oakland too, which is street running trackage with frieghts and Amtrak running on it. Hopefully I'll post pictures in the next few days once I sit down and edit them. And I've still got those pics from the UP E units to edit too.

  • Hoah,

I want to get a telephoto lens. I don't remember exactly where it starts but the lens goes up to 300mm. So it should get a good shot. Then I would like one in between that. One that will go to about 200mm I think there 70mm - 200mm. I will be looking up at my local camera store called first photo for the lenses. They have everything you'd ever want. I just want this camera to arrive now!!!! I can't wait!!!Big Smile [:D]

    Get here sooon!!!!

  • Huh? Anyway time for another good talk... what exactly is digital comand control (DCC)?

  • DCC stands for Digital Comand Control.  Locos with a DCC decoder installed in them, get special signals from a base, which can contral basic funtions.  DCC is easier than DC in wiring terms, because with DC when you wire one track to allow more than one train running, you have to use blocks, but DCC eleiminates this.

Okay, I'm lost. What are you talking about???Confused [%-)]

DCC is a really nice system it allows so you can run one locomotive without another one moving on as this would happen with DC. It also allows for many different light functions like flashing ditch lights, beacons, marker lights/ number lights to come on seperately fromt the headlight. Things like this are some of what DCC can do for you. It can be quite an experience. But I have to tell you, it is very exspensive.

    Happy railroadingLaugh [(-D]

  • James, I've got a 18-200mm lens myself, which has been okay, but I think if I did things over again I'd go for something with a smaller range (which usually means better optical quality), and just buy several lenses. A 70-200mm lens sounds about right, along with a 300mm prime and some sort of lens to fill out the lower range. But I get along with what I've got.

No, I didn't ride the trolleys (technically called cable cars), this time. They are usually pretty full with tourists, and it's not worth the fight. I have ridden them in the past though, and it is a neat ride.

That's an interesting word choice for the F word censor..made me laugh...through my tears...

Oh, and I'd reccomend having something like an 18-70, a 70-200, and a few fixed-length bazooka lenses. That's my dream, anyways

  • lol..Nice cover for the F- bomb..lmao.

DCC isn't that expensive..You can get a Digitrax Zephyr which includes everything to start DCC railroading for 143$ on first hobby.

And you could get a BLI locomotive with sound for 119$.
