N Gauge passenger cars needed

  • I have a rather tight radius that the longer passenger cars (Amtrack etc.) won't work properly on. I just dscovered the 50 ft Western Maryland cars by Micro Trains that work perfectly but I can't seem to find any other than the Troop Kitchen car and the Troop Sleeper car.

Can anyone suggest other cars of this type and size that I could find and where?

  • In a trainset pack, you may find some 1860era Bachmann "Prarie Flyer" or "old Time" freights. They pack some American 4-4-0 steamers with some 1860's era passenger & freight cars. You may be lucky to find single cars that are similar to ones in the set. THey seem to be OOP at Bachmann. If you give them a call, they can make more.

More recent vintage would be the Athearn/MDC shorty Overton or 50' Overland cars. They make very nice sets for about $50. Bachmann used to make some Plus shorty 50' heavyweight cars. They seem also to be OOP. You may get lucky at swap meets.

Swap meets may also be a source for ancient Arnold cars. THey did some 50' shorty cars made for tiny layouts with tight curves like yours.

Frankly, I'd just have a Troop Sleeper or 2 mixed in witha few freight cars. Many trains into the 50's were little more than a coach or mail car that provided branchline service to the junction with the mainline.
