Looking for forums on narrow gauge model railroading

  • A year ago last fall I became the recipient of several items of Bachman On30 livery. My father had purchased them in a promotion through the Hawthorne Village mail order house, and then realized that they were not in fact static models. Having no inclination on his own to start a layout in his condominium, and having a son in the hobby, he passed the equipment down to me. There were three locomotives and a number of passenger cars, all painted in garish and non-prototypical designs. So the first step was to strip, repaint, and apply new decals to all of the hardware. Now I am thinking of starting a small On30 shelf layout, or at least a diorama so that I have somewhere to display the equipment. One thing I have noted is that not a great deal is published about narrow gauge in the monthly periodicals; a recent exception being the fall series in Model Railroader on building an On3 layout in a garage. Otherwise I don’t see a lot of narrow-gauge articles and product reviews in the monthly magazines. MR seems mainly to concentrate of HO and N. Where as Classic and Toy Trains concentrates on O27, with the occasional article on S. And of course Garden Railways concentrates on G scale. (I hope here that we won’t quibble about the fact that a lot of G-scale equipment is in fact narrow gauge.) Otherwise the in-between scales seem to get very little coverage. I am hoping someone can point me in the direction of a magazine or online forum that specializes in the narrow-gauge aspect of the hobby.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

  • There is a bi-monthly magazine called "Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette." I buy it at my local hobby shop but it's published by Benchmark Publications in Los Altos, CA.

I'm not sure if you want to be that specific, but there's also a forum board on the narrow gauge East Broad Top Railroad:

They have a number of forums, including one on O scale modelling and one on narrow gauge modelling.

  • Hi Stubby. Good advice here. I'll add one more. Check out Yahoo Groups. They have all sorts of narrow gauge groups, including On30. I'm in HOn3, but you might want to belong to others too, as there are some pretty good ideas amongst those other scales... Lemme see, a link? Try http://groups.yahoo.com/group/   If that soesn't do it, just Google "yahoo groups".
