HO Trains

  • Hello,

I am trying to find out the right type of train set to buy for someone for Christmas.  I want there to be CSX and John Deere trains.  Should I buy the whole CSX set and then buy a John Deere train?  Will the John Deere train fit on the CSX HO scale track?  Thanks!

  • You shouldn't have too much difficulty finding a boxed train set with a CSX locomotive, some freight cars, a caboose, a loop of track and a transformer/controller, for between $50 and $100, at your local hobby shop.

Or try www.trainworld.com or you can call them on 800 541 7010.

They also may be able to help you with a flat car with "John Deere" tractors on it  --  just be sure to specify HO gauge.

Another good potential source would be www.walthers.com or 800 487 2467.

  • Just to clarify, yes, HO scale is HO scale.   It is a standard.   If they're built correctly, they are interchangeable, with a few exceptions that you won't see in sets.

That said, it is possible to buy two HO sets from two manufacurers who make track that is the same HO size, but will only connect properly to the same type of track.  Any HO train will run on either type of track;  but the track pieces fit together differently.

Anyway. Most of the train sets today come with what is called EZ track. It snaps together in just a few minutes of prep time. So it should be possible to connect both sets if they both contain the EZ snap track. Some sets come with regular sections of track and is not compatable with EZ track. So just look for the type of track the train set has.
