If this site does not get rid of the stinking, sneaky, popup advertisements that I have to use "control, alternate, delete" to stop by next week, I'm going to cancel my subscriptions to both "Model Railroader" and "Trains" and write Mr. Boettcher a letter telling him exactly why.

stupid pop-ups. i hate them too, but at least they're easier to manage here than on other sites. 1) they're relevant to the site 2) you don't get 3 pop-ups per page viewed.

the problem on this site is they pop up where you're trying to click. put them up in the corner where nobody clicks!

Hey troops, fear not for GOOGLE has a great pop up blocker and it's free. Just put the Google Tool Bar on your home page and activate the pop up blocker. It's taken care of 99.5 percent of those little beasts for me. I can go to the MR homepage or come here to the forums and I'm not bothered by pop ups at all. Give it a try.

Guess I'll be calling customer service on Thursday to cancel my subscriptions. I have "pop-up Stopper" but this gets around them. if you use "Google" you have placed spyware on your computer to track every website you visit. I use "ad-aware" to clean my system periodically.

Kalmbach is being really stupid about this, they're liable to lose far more subscribers than they gain.

May I suggest a real ad-blocker, pop-up-blocker, internet security software such as McAfee or Norton. Not only do they block ALL popups, they provide security against viruses and worms, and also control usage of cookies and spyware. Granted, the $30 price is a bit much, but for some, it might be worth the money.

Yeah, and watch out for Major League Baseball, they have a spy satellite that can read your electronic organizer from space. Be sure to hang metal coat hangers from your ceiling and wrap yourself in foil to evade detection. (now that's sarcasm!) [;)]

But seriously, www.google.com puts spyware on your computer just visiting there? That's a pretty hefty allegation, do you have any proof to back up your accusation?

This is starting to sound like the people that routinely call the newspaper threatening to cancel their subscriptions everytime the comics page format is changed.

That system is gauranteed to stop trains.com pop-ups, I know because I've used it. It doesn't come with any adware or spyware, it won't send you to any porn sites, and doesn't have any viruses, I promise.

I chked with SPYCHECKER.COM and they have absolutly nothing on Google having SPYWARE on their sites. I do know that the GOOGLE tool bar popup blocker really works great. I've had it on my homepage for about 4 wks now and so far it's blocked 354 popups, and Im not bothered by popups on any KALMBACH page AT ALL.....Stop complaining, download the tool bar, and try it, you'll like it.

I wasn't going to get involved in this since I'm only the developer, not the decision maker on this type of stuff.

I wanted to clear up something regarding Google.

It is true that Google can track every website you visit. However they make it very clear that by using certain features, Google needs to have some information about the pages you are viewing. They make it very easy to enable/disable these features at the user's discretion.

On the other hand, Spyware tracks and/or reports on what you're doing without your knowledge and/or consent.

From the Google Toolbar Privacy Page:

For this reason, we provide you the opportunity to disable these features on the Privacy Information page (accessed by selecting "Privacy Information..." in the Toolbar's "Google" menu). Regarding the popups and having to CTRL-ALT-DEL, do you mean you have to restart your computer or is that to bring up Task Manager to shut down the browser window? Is the popup off the screen, not visible at all? I'm just curious because this is the first time I've heard of anyone having to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to get rid of popups.

I don't like the popups at all and am wondering if the popups in the forums are really necessary because most of the people on the forum pages already subscribe to one of the Kalmbach products and I feel that it is a waste of your time. The popups on the magazine pages and the main webpages would be more of a benefit to the publisher. I won't stop my subscription but I refuse to subscribe to any more of your magazines.

Quit using that POS Internet Exploder that comes with your system. It has more holes than swiss cheese and MS has not incentive to improve it now that they beat out Netscape. Download Mozilla from www.mozilla.org and use it instead. It has built in popup blocking, better e-mail management, it's standard compliant, and no MS ulterior motives in its design. I have not had a popup in months because I use Mozilla.
